Jensen symposium
CCB Hosts Inaugural Cancer Symposium
The 2009 Cincinnati Cancer Symposium Series
(October 14-16) was an overwhelming success. It was attended
by nearly 300 scientists who came from all over the United States
and from Europe. Attendees shared excellent talks and poster
presentations, and enjoyed a high level of scientific
discourse.
This inaugural symposium was focused on nuclear receptors to honor the contributions of Dr. Elwood Jensen, Lasker Award winner and esteemed member of the CCB faculty. Dr. Jensen, considered the father of the entire nuclear receptor field, was an active participant in the symposium. In his address, keynote speaker Bert O'Malley, from Baylor College of Medicine, noted Dr. Jensen's many contributions as a pioneer in the field of hormone activity, as well as his value as a colleague and friend.
The symposium was organized by the department of cancer and cell biology and sponsored in partnership with the Cincinnati Cancer Consortium. Invited speakers included ten National Academy members, five Lasker Award winners, and a recipient of the National Medal of Science.
Primary credit for the quality of speakers, attendees, and topics goes to CCB Vice-Chair, Dr. Sohaib Khan. Other contributors from the department include Sharon Young, who coordinated many operational aspects of the Symposium; Glenn Doerman who designed and produced the posters and much of the promotional materials; Peter Allendorfer who handled all IT issues; and Teresa Larkin and Irv Simon who provided overall administrative support and financial management.
